Whether you're getting ready for homecoming or graduation, preparation for the formal season is truly upon us. Being obsessed with formal events and somewhat infamous for owning 4+ formal dresses, I thought I'd share some of my tips on how to find the perfect formal dress.

Before you start hunting down your ideal dress - online or in stores - it's nice to have a rough idea of what you'd like. The best way to do this is to find some inspiration, whether it be cut, colour or style. For me, it was a full-length, strapless and preferably pastel. I noticed this trend after pinning an excessive number of formal dresses and accessories on a Pinterest board dedicated solely to formals and special events.

Online Shopping or Going In Stores?

This is a very personal choice. On one hand, buying your dress online often means that you have a much bigger variety, its cheaper and you don't have to go through the hassle of having 178 dresses hanging in a tiny little fitting room; however, you run the risk of an ill-fitting dress. On the other hand, if you're going to buy a dress in stores, you know that it'll look good on you; but can often be much more time consuming and demoralising when you can't find the right dress.

Either way, I recommend going into stores for a fitting sesh. This way, you'll get a better idea of what cut and colour looks the most flattering on you, which you can use as a reference for buying a dress online. Of course, you might also pick up a dress in the process.

For those of you who are a bit skeptical about ordering dresses online, make sure you check the return policy. I ordered one of my dresses from Fame & Partners*. They offer a really good online shopping experience, their packaging is gorgeous, and the good return policy was definitely a peace of mind.

Sample/Closing Down Sales

A great way to save some money is to go to sample or closing down sales. This is where you can really find some inexpensive and unique formal dresses. I ended up getting my perfect formal dress because I found it at a closing down sale for almost half the price. So definitely keep your eyes peeled for any formal dress sales!
